Culture, Sport and Recreation Statistics
The importance of culture, sport and recreation can be seen in the context of promoting and improving the economic, social and environmental health and 'well-being' of local areas, a key government aim. This can be achieved through increasing participation in activities and widening access to facilities for all groups in society, especially those disadvantaged. Within this context, local authorities act as both key providers and strategic facilitators of provision by others. They must also have regard to the performance framework introduced by Best Value and Comprehensive Performance Assessment (CPA).
This is the thirty second annual survey of estimated expenditure on Culture, Sport and Recreation Services (previously Leisure and Recreation Statistics) to be published by the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy.
A more detailed description of the policy context for leisure and cultural services can be found in the Institute's Technical Information Services information stream, 'Leisure and Culture' found atwww.tisonline.net.
