In 2007-08 local authorities in Great Britain spent a total of £22.5 billion on the provision of social care. This is an increase of 3.8% since 2006-07 when expenditure amounted to £21.7 billion. It is estimated that local authorities will spend £23.6 billion in 2008-09, a further £1,021 million or 4.5% increase over 2007-08.
